Ready to level up your headshot game? Taking a great photo isn’t just about looking into the camera—it’s about finding the right pose, expression, and confidence to let your personality shine. Here are some pro tips from a former model to make sure your next headshot captures you at your absolute best:

1. Find Your Angle

Straight-on shots are fine, but let’s add some flair. Slightly tilt your head to one side for a more flattering look. Pro tip: The poses that feel the most awkward often look the best. Want to nail a side profile? Stand with your shoulders back, twist your torso so your chest faces the camera, while your legs stay pointed to the side. It may feel like yoga class, but trust me—it works!

2. Perfect Your Posture

Confidence starts with how you carry yourself. Stand or sit up straight, relax your shoulders, and avoid looking stiff. For headshots, pull your shoulders way back and push your neck slightly forward (yes, like a turtle) to create a defined jawline and eliminate double chins. Feels weird, looks amazing!

3. Bring Your Eyes to Life

Your eyes should tell a story. Think of something that makes you happy or confident—it’ll give you that natural spark. A sneaky trick? Look away with just your eyes for a moment, then snap them back to the camera right before the shot. Instant engagement!

4. Relax Your Face

Tension doesn’t photograph well. Take a few deep breaths and loosen up. Stretch your hands or shake them out to release nervous energy. A soft smile is often a winner, but if you’re going for a serious look, keep your lips lightly together.  If you use your headshots for marketing purposes, smiles are best.

5. Hair and Makeup Savvy

Keep hair tidy and makeup balanced. For ladies, add a little extra blush, eyeshadow, and lipstick to compensate for harsh lights. If you’re going for black-and-white photography, go bolder with makeup—it helps your features pop. Bonus tip: Ask for a test shot to see if you need touch-ups.

6. Dress for Success

Solid colors and subtle patterns are your best friends. Avoid busy designs that draw attention away from your face. Bring 2-3 outfit options, and don’t forget accessories—ties, pocket squares, scarves, or jewelry can completely change the vibe.

7. Practice Makes Perfect

Take a few test shots before the big day. Experiment with different angles and expressions until you find your sweet spot. The more comfortable you are, the better your photos will look!

Use these tips, and you’ll walk away with a headshot that’s not just professional but unforgettable. Smile, pose, and let your confidence shine through!
